The Pipe Surface Area calculator computes the interior or exterior surface area of a pipe based on the interior or exterior diameter of circular conduit or pipe and the length of the pipe.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (d) Diameter of Pipe (use interior diameter for interior surface area, and exterior diameter for the exterior surface area)
  • (l) Length of Pipe

Surface Area of Pipe (SA):  The calculator returns the surface area in square inches.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

NOTE: Use the Pipe Coating Amount calculator to compute how much material (e.g., paint, polyethylene, polyurethane, zinc, bitumen, FBE or mortar) is needed to cover the surface area of the pipe.

The Math / Science

The equation for the surface area of a pipe is:

    SA =2π⋅(d/2)⋅l
